  1. What is Iter Romanum?

Iter Romanum is a unique, week-long, full-immersion tour of Rome - tantum Latine! We will tour Rome's sites – ancient, medieval, Renaissance and modern – read excerpts from Latin literature, discuss what we see, read and hear, and listen to our distinguished tour guides (mystagogi) as they show us around the fascinating city known as caput mundi — all while spending the week living, performing all of our tasks, and holding all of our conversations in Latin only.

  2. Who goes on Iter Romanum?

Past participants of Iter Romanum have included university faculty, high-school Latin teachers, graduate and undergraduate college students, and Latin enthusiasts. Participants under 18 years of age are not normally admitted.

  3. How many people can go on Iter Romanum?

Enrollment in Iter Romanum ranges from 12-15 participants.

  4. What is the program structure? What is a typical day like?

Each day will be structured around a visit to an historical site in or around Rome. We will either walk or take public transportation to that site, where we will be met by a tour guide who will speak to us about what we are seeing. Sites we have visited in the past have been the Roman Forum, St. Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, and other famous sites. We will leave for all of our outings in the morning after breakfast and usually return around dinner time. Possible destination sites (subject to change) include: Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Circus Maximus, Domus Aurea, Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican necropolis and the tomb of St. Peter, Vatican Museums, Villa Borghese, Ostia Antica.

  5. Will food be provided?

Iter Romanum tuition covers breakfast and one other meal per day (usually dinner). Not covered in the registration cost are snacks and one meal per day (usually lunch), alcoholic beverages (i.e., wine or beer with meals).

  6. Where will we stay in Rome?

We will reside at the Ospizio Salesiano Sacro Cuore, conveniently located in Via Marsala near Rome's Termini Station. Rooms are air conditioned.

  7. What are the prerequisites for participating in Iter Romanum?

You are eligible to participate in Iter Romanum if you have already learned Latin on paper (at a minimum the equivalent of two years of traditional college-level or four years of a high school Latin program) and are an alumna/us of at least one full-immersion Latin workshop. It is not necessary to have completed a SALVI-run Rusticatio; alumnae/i of other Latin workshops (Father Reginald Foster's Schola Aestiva, the Conventiculm Vasintoniense or Kentuckiense, etc.) are most welcome. The important thing is that you have had some previous experience speaking Latin in an extended workshop setting. If you have not had previous experience, you will be considered only if you can demonstrate comparable experience and/or provide a letter of recommendation from an experienced speaker of Latin who can attest to your qualifications and preparedness to be a full participant in the program.

  8. What is the application process?

The Iter Romanum 2010 Application is now available. Visit the Application page for more information and to download an application. Submitting an application does not guarantee admission to Iter Romanum. Students will be notified of acceptance after a review of their application.

  9. When should I submit my application? What is the application deadline?

The application deadline is March 1st, 2010.

Invariably there are more qualified applicants than there are spaces, so the earlier you submit your application the better. A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required with your application in order to hold your space in the trip.

  10. How much does Iter Romanum cost?

The cost of Iter Romanum is $1600 per person, covering registration, reading materials, museum and site entrance fees, transportation for any tour-related activities, lodging, breakfast and one other meal per day (usually dinner). Not covered in the registration cost are: travel to/from Rome, ground transportation to/from airports, one meal per day (usually lunch), snacks, alcoholic beverages (i.e., wine or beer with meals).

  11. Do you offer scholarships for Iter Romanum?

Each year a limited number of scholarships may be available, depending on funding sources. If you would like to make a donation to help make scholarships available for future participants, click here.

For more information about scholarship opportunities, see the scholarships page.

  12. Can I get continuing education credit for Iter Romanum?

SALVI does not offer formal credit for attending Iter Romanum.

  13. When is payment in full due?

A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required with your application in order to hold your space in the trip. The full tuition balance will be due on March 1, 2010. If you apply after March 1st and there is still room on the trip, payment in full will be due immediately. Applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

  14. Can I leave Iter Romanum early?

No. Iter Romanum is a full-time, week-long immersion experience. Students make a full-time commitment to the course, from the time they arrive and settle in to the time the trip is over.

  15. If I cannot attend, will SALVI issue a refund?

Once you have paid in full by the March 21st deadline your tuition will not be refunded. This is because we require a minimum of 12 participants to be able to hold Iter Romanum, and individual participant cancellations may unfairly result in the cancelation of the whole trip for everyone. However, if we do not have the minimum number of 12 participants paid in full by March 1st, the trip will be cancelled and all deposits and fees will be refunded.

  16. When should I book my flight to Rome?

We highly recommend that you wait to hear from us with confirmation that the trip is going ahead before making your travel arrangements to Rome. If we reach our minimum number of paid-in-full participants before March 1st, 2010, we will notify you right away so you can begin booking travel. Please be advised, however, that we may not be able to provide this information until the final deadline of March 1, 2010. Please be reminded that the cost of Iter Romanum does not include travel to/from Rome or ground transportation to/from airports.
